I own a Toyota Camry and never gave much thought to what the logo meant. From far it looked like a T to me, which stood for Toyota. While doing the research for this logo, I found out that it is actually three elipses depicting the heart of the customer, the heart of the product, and the ever-expanding technological advancements and boundless opportunities that lie ahead.

I finally found the official explaination from Toyota, thanks to JoAnn Paules

The current Toyota Mark consists of three ovals: the two perpendicular center ovals represent a relationship of mutual trust between the customer and Toyota.  These ovals combine to symbolize the letter "T" for Toyota.  The space in the background implies a global expansion of Toyota's technology and unlimited potential for the future.

One website even described it as a cowboy with a big hat. :-)

Actually, you can find all the letters of "TOYOTA" inside that
logo!

Use your imagination!

Coincidence, huh?

Haha, I discovered this too while I was walking through a parking lot and saw
the badge on my way to school.

Great minds think alike!

How did you find the logo?
Michelle  - ... Maybe a BAT?   |2007-05-01 17:37:22
I saw an old corolla with part of the logo missing on the top and bottom. If you
remove portions of the ellipse, it resembles a flying bat as if seen from
overhead. I do love bats so it stood out to me!

I've considered everything about this logo and as a designer, I can't support
much about it. I see what everyone's trying to describe but I think it's a
stretch. If a logo needs so much explaination to describe it's intent and the
image is then able to stand for some other company with a similar mission, it
fails miserably.

I thought it was a stylized bull.

I\'m a student and I\'m looking for documents about Toyota, especially
the marketing. I\'m very glad if you\'ll give me the information about
this as soon as possible. Thank you very much.

I always thought it looked like a bull's head.

My five year old son also is convinced it is a stylized bull. (For this reason
Toyota is his favourite brand)

Its a representation of thread going through the eye of a needle. Toyota is the
largest manufacture of automated looms and this is done to pay homage.

When I was growing up, my family told me it symbolizes the head of the a water
