Rai, the
beauty queen turned screen queen, has moved from beyond the
flashlights into the limelight. She is the undisputed most gorgeous
beauty queen who ever stepped on to the Indian Celluloid. Over the
years her intoxicating beauty, characteristic smile and famous
blue-green eyes have charmed everybody, from schoolboys to fellow
artists, from repenting married men to aspiring bachelors. It
wouldn't be hard to imagine that she must be getting a dozen messages
everyday vowing everlasting love and marriage proposals.
While studying architecture in Mumbai, she entered the world of modeling
and even without a regular portfolio of pictures, was soon in great
demand, bagging many prestigious ad campaigns and gracing the most
important fashion shows. But it was her unforgettable Pepsi
commercial with actor Aamir Khan -"Hi- I'm Sanju"- that
took her to the masses. In 1993, as rumours about her entering the
Miss India contest were thriving, the media endorsed her by terming
her as the Face of 1993.

She did participate in Miss India pageant held at Goa in 1994.
It was
a tough contest and she was the first runner-up, losing only to the
sensational Sushmita Sen.
She also won the Miss Catwalk, Miss Photogenic and the significant -
Miss Perfect 10. But her gateway to immortality is perhaps the beauty
pageant she won later that year - the prestigious Miss World, held at
South Africa, where she beat 87 other contestants to be declared as
the most beautiful woman in the whole world. It was a magnificent
year by all norms, since earlier this year Sushmita had won the Miss
Universe pageant and Indian beauty queens has become the center of
attraction.

Charmed by Ms Rai when I met her in 1994, it's been pleasing to see her career continue so well. Your site is well-done and
a fitting tribute to a sparkling young lady. My one disappointment is that I found only a little text on the Pepsi commercial for which she is famed (and which I'd missed while in India) and which actually triggered this search.
