The Department of Industrial Development was first constituted in
1967 in the then Ministry of Industrial Development & Company Affairs. In 1973
the Ministry was renamed as the Ministry of Industrial Development. With the addition of
some other departments in 1974 the name was changed to Ministry of Industry & Civil
Supplies. This was changed to the Ministry of Industry in 1976 which comprised the
Departments of Industrial Development and Heavy Industry. In 1990, the Ministry was
expanded to include the newly created Department of Small Scale Industries and Agro and
Rural Industries (SSI&ARI). The Bureau of Public Enterprises was also detached from
the Ministry of Finance and included in the Ministry as the Department of Public
Enterprises. In March, 1995 the Department of Industrial Development was split and another
department, namely the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion was carved out of
