NBA Logos - Design and History

The Atlanta Hawks are one of the worst teams in the NBA. Except for a few seasons in the 1980s and 1990's, the team is usually at the bottom of the league's standing. The franchise was formed in 1946 as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks (named after Tri-City native Black Hawk) of the National Basketball League; it was based in the tri-city area between Moline, Illinois, Rock Island, Illinois, and Davenport, Iowa. Over the years, the team has moved to Atlanta and are now called the Atlanta Hawks. The current logo, shown on the left, depicts a hawk holding onto a basketball.

Lets hope that the franchise has a few good seasons for the rest of the decade.

The Portland Trailblzers logo is 10 red and silver lines on a black background between script

Harry Glickman’s cousin, Frank Glickman, of Boston, Massachusetts, designed the original logo, consisting of a straight up and down pinwheel with black on the top and red on the bottom.  It’s meaning is simple: a modern graphic interpretation of the game of basketball, five players from one side playing against five players from another.

In 1992, the Blazers changed from the lowercase typography to a bold, uppercase typeface, adding a dimension to the word mark and tilting the pinwheel, an affectionate name that evolved with fans and media, forty-five degrees to signify motion of the game.

The Boston Celtics logo is Celtic in gold and black twirling a basketball in a green circle

The world-famous figure has his left eye winking at you, his left hand resting on his shillelagh, his right index finger is pointing straight upward with a brown basketball sitting atop, his left foot crossed over and to the side of the right foot, he possesses a big smile (with a pipe projecting from the right corner of his mouth) and he is dressed in black buckle shoes, black pants, a gold front-button vest with a matching bow tie (with green three-leaf clovers displayed prominently in view on both), a long-sleeved white shirt and all topped off with a black derby hat with the same matching three-leaf clovers.

The Dallas Mavericks are one of the hottest teams in the NBA. They lost to the Miami Heat in the 2005-2006 playoffs. They are owned by the often controversial Internet billionaire, Mark Cuban. The team has a lot of star power with top players like Dirk Nowitski and Josh Howard.

The Dallas Mavericks were admitted into the NBA in 1980-1981. They paid a $12 million entry fee to join the NBA. The team's name came from the 1957-1962 TV western Maverick, as James Garner played the namesake character, and was one of the original team owners.

The Mavericks logo consists of a half-moon and a half-horse placed on a shield. The Texas star is seen at the bottom of the logo.

NBA Logos - Design and History

I am big sports fan. Its not like I remember every sports stat or remember every game, but I do like to watch sports on the TV and the NBA is one of my favourite league to watch. This section of the website contains the design and history of the NBA teams such as the Lakers, Spurs, Pistons and all the NBA teams.

The fabled Jerry West, otherwise known as "Mr.Clutch," is the player in profile on the official NBA logo. As his biography on NBA.com points out, West is widely regarded as one of the greatest guards in the history of the game. Not especially gifted by height or athleticism, he was a notoriously driven player who broke his nose nine times and often had to be carried off the court.
Jerry West grew up in a blue-collar family in Cheylan, West Virginia. After a stellar career at West Virginia University, he was recruited by the Minneapolis Lakers in 1960. The team moved down to Los Angeles that year, and over the next 14 years, West's career with the Lakers proved the stuff of legends.

I hope you find this section of the site entertaining.  If you have some information about NBA logos you would like to share, please send the information.

NBA Logos - Design and History
Image The Detroit Pistons are one of the hottest teams in the NBA and probably the most consistent Eastern Conference team in the last 5 years.  The Pistons have a long history in the NBA and have a blue collar work ethic much like the city itself. The Pistons logo has gone through a  few changes over its life. The current logo consists of a red basketball in the background with the text "Detroit Pistons" on it. The ball and the text ahave a blue outline as well.

NBA Logos - Design and History
Image The original Charlotte Hornets relocated to New Orleans for the 2002-03 season. At that time, the city and the NBA agreed to create a new team in Charlotte for the 2004-05 season.  While many groups bid for the ownership of the team, a group led by Black Entertainment Television founder Robert L. Johnson won out. On June 15, 2006 it was announced that NBA legend Michael Jordan would become the 2nd largest owner in the Bobcats second to Johnson himself.

NBA Logos - Design and History
 Image

With the NBA playoffs for 2007 reaching its final stages, I thought I would research the logo of the San Antonio Spurs, one of the last 4 team still remaining in the playoffs. The Spurs are one of the hottest team in the NBA this decade having won 3 championships with their big stars Tim Duncan and Tony Parker.

The current logo of the Spurs is the word SpUrs with the letter U drawn as a silver spur.  It is also said that the outline of the logo is said to represent the AT&T center where the Spurs moved to in 2002-2003. The logo was unveiled at the same time as the move to their new home.
