The 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup will be the eleventh Cricket World Cup, and will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand. Only the 10 test playing nations will participate in this event unlike the prior World Cups where the associate teams also participated. The ICC unveiled the Logo of ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 after the final of Cricket World Cup 2011 on 2 April 2011. Since the event is being jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand, the logo is a mix of motifs taken from the indigenous people of Australia (Aborigines) and of New Zealand (the Maoris).

The selected motifs are:

* Maori Tohora symbolizing toughness, pride and tribal culture
* Aboriginal journey tracks symbolizing spirit of the land

The upper body is taken from the Moari motif while the legs and the bat are taken from the Aboriginal motif. The logo is designed to signify toughness, glory, resilience, connection and belonging.

The Australian arm of FutureBrand was invited to produce the logo for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.

Overall, I liked the logo as it incorporates the indigenous aspects of both countries much like how the 2011 ICC World Cup in India had a very sub-continental look. The colors though are slightly dull and probably could have been brighter. Looking forward to another exciting event starting in a few weeks.

Vistara Logo - Design and History http://www.dinesh.com/history_of_logos/airline_logos/vistara_logo_design_and_history.html http://www.dinesh.com/history_of_logos/airline_logos/vistara_logo_design_and_history.html

In August 2014, the Tata Group and Singapore Airlines unveiled the logo, livery and uniform of their new joint-venture airline, Airline Vistara. Vistara hosted a big event in New Delhi on the 12th of August and was attended by senior members of both companies. The airline plans to offer 87 weekly flights during its first year of operation. Destinations will include Mumbai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Srinagar, Patna and Chandigarh.

Vistara is derived from vistaar means €˜infinite expanse€™ in Sanskrit. It is the perfect cue for the airline that aims to push back the boundaries of air travel and create seamless experiences. Vistaar also conjures up the image most associated with a smooth flight €“ an endless, blue horizon. The Vistara star is derived from a Yantra, an ancient symbol that depicts an unbounded universe in a perfect mathematical form. At its heart, is an 8 pointed star derived from the compass rose that signals the brand€™s commitment to excellence in everything that it does. The logo and concept was designed by Ray+Keshavan and Brand Union.

The cabin crew uniform has been designed by fashion house Abraham & Thakore and will see the airhostesses wear smart kurtis and pants.

I personally am not awed by the logo but respect the concept and the simplicity. I like the concept of Vistaar and infinite expanse as it goes well with the notion of travel. I hope they do get to fly international sooner than the 5 years, so that their customers can experience international travel. The purple hue that has been chosen for the logo, livery and uniforms reminds me of the color scheme used by Thai Airways. I find that color scheme has a certain elegance. Overall a simple concept that is contemporary but based on traditional elements.

Other logos that are based on the star include - Macy's, Converse, Dallas Cowboys and Fedex Kinkos among others, while Heineken, Starbucks, On Star, Sirius make use the star in their logos.

Baltimore Ravens Logo - Design and History http://www.dinesh.com/history_of_logos/nfl_logos/baltimore_ravens_logo_design_and_history.html http://www.dinesh.com/history_of_logos/nfl_logos/baltimore_ravens_logo_design_and_history.html

Image       The Baltimore Ravens are a professional American football team based in Baltimore, Maryland. They compete in the AFC North Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The Ravens have won two Super Bowl titles, Super Bowl XXXV, in the 2000 season against the New York Giants. They won again in the 2012-2013 season. The Ravens have been a leading team in the NFL in the last few years having made many playoff appearances in that time. They are known for their tough defence lead by Ray Lewis (who announced his retirement at the end of the 2012-2013 season)

The Ravens were chosen from a  Baltimore Sun telephone poll in 1996, the name is borrowed from a well-known poem by Baltimore native Edgar Allen Poe. Poe lived in Baltimore before his death in 1849 and his body is buried in Baltimore. The Ravens logo consists of a mean looking Raven in the team colors of purple and gold with the letter B. The mean looking Raven fits well with the strength of the team - mean defense.

The Miami Heat are a professional basketball team based in Miami, Florida, United States. The Heat were formed in 1988 as an expansion franchise along with the Charlotte Hornets and they along with the Orlando Magic are the only two NBA franchises to represent the state of Florida. The Miami Heat have had some up and down years through their life in the NBA and finally won the Championship in 2006 defeating the Dallas Mavericks. In 2010, the Heat shot into the limelight by signing LeBron James and Chris Bosh to join Dwanye Wade creating what they believe will be a multi-Championship winning team (some call them the Heatles, while others called them the cHeats)

The origin of the name Heat are sketchy but obviously reflects the year-round hot/warm weather of Miami. It is said that the name was selected in some type of contest.

The logo is pretty simple and shows the follow main elements

  • A basketball on fire going through a basketball hoop.
  • The T on the word Heat also shows a little flame on the top
  • The color red is the prominent color on the logo and is also the color of their jerseys

The images below shows the old and current logo. The previous logo was very similar and was changed in 1999.

SuperBowl Logos http://www.dinesh.com/history_of_logos/nfl_logos/superbowl_logos.html http://www.dinesh.com/history_of_logos/nfl_logos/superbowl_logos.html
The Super Bowl is the championship game of the National Football League (NFL), the highest level of professional American football in the United States, culminating a season that begins in the autumn of the previous calendar year. The Super Bowl uses Roman numerals to identify each game, rather than the year in which it is held. For example, Super Bowl I was played on January 15, 1967, following the regular season played in 1966, while Super Bowl XLV will be played on February 6, 2011, to determine the champion of the 2010 regular season.

The game was created as part of a merger agreement between the NFL and its then-rival league, the American Football League (AFL). It was agreed that the two leagues' champion teams would play in an AFL-NFL World Championship Game until the merger was to officially begin in 1970. After the merger, each league was redesignated as a "conference", and the game was then played between the conference champions.

Shown below are the logos of all the Super Bowl played so far. Each logo represents typically has elements of the game, the Roman Numeral, regional touch among other things. Some of pretty neat and some are quite awful. However, in 2011, the NFL decided that all the logos are going to the standardized and look pretty much the same (read Boring!!!). Enjoy some of the past logos.

SuperBowl XLVII 2013 Logo Design http://www.dinesh.com/history_of_logos/nfl_logos/superbowl_xlvii_2013_logo_design.html http://www.dinesh.com/history_of_logos/nfl_logos/superbowl_xlvii_2013_logo_design.html

Super Bowl XLVII will be the 47th annual edition of the Super Bowl in American football, and the 43rd annual championship game of the modern-era National Football League (NFL). The game, to be played on February 3, 2013, will pit the champions of the AFC, the Baltimore Ravens and the NFC champion, San Francisco 49ers and will be held at Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. This will be the first time in history that two brothers are head coaches of the respective teams. Hence this event has been unofficially nicknamed, the Harbaugh Bowl or the SuperBaugh.

The Super Bowl logos underwent a major change a few years ago and some new rules were introduced to standardize the Super Bowl logos. Starting with the 2011 Super Bowl, the theme of the logo will basically remain the same. The only differences from year to year are the stadium backdrop and the Roman numerals for the game. For this Superbowl, it means the logo displays the Superdome in the background with the Vince Lombardi Trophy sitting on top of the Roman numerals for the game. The city hosting the event is at the bottom of the logo.

SuperBowl XLVI will be between the AFC Champions - Baltimore Ravens and the NFC Champions - San Francisco 49ers.

I am personally not thrilled with this decision by the NFL. If you look at the Super Bowl logos from the past you can see they each had a unique style that represented various aspects of the region, the country, the game etc. Some logos were really well designed and some were cheesy, but that was the fun of it. Going forward, all the logos are going to the equally standardized (read Boring!!!)

Pro Bowl 2013 Logo Design http://www.dinesh.com/history_of_logos/pro_bowl_logos/pro_bowl_2013_logo_design.html http://www.dinesh.com/history_of_logos/pro_bowl_logos/pro_bowl_2013_logo_design.html

The Pro Bowl is the all-star game of the National Football League (NFL). Since the merger with the rival American Football League (AFL) in 1970, it has been officially called the AFC-NFC Pro Bowl, matching the top players in the American Football Conference (AFC) against those in the National Football Conference (NFC). Currently, players are voted into the Pro Bowl by the coaches, the players themselves, and the fans. The Pro Bowl has been played in Hawaii since 1970 except for 2009 when it was held in Miami. The 2013 game will be held in Hawaii as well and will be played on Jan 27th, 2013, a week before Super Bowl XVII.

The Pro Bowl logo, just like the Super Bowl logo has been standarized in 2011 and has taken the same black & white steel feel to it. The logo consists of the following  key elements

  • The logo is in the shape of the Pro Bowl trophy, which is basically the shape of a football.
  • There are 4 stars on each side representing the 4 conferences in the AFC (AFC North, AFC South, AFC East, AFC West) and the NFC (NFC North, NFC South, NFC East, NFC West)
  • The only non black and white element of the logo is the colorful NFL logo at the bottom of the trophy.

Once again, much like the new Super Bowl logo which is black and white and allows little change, I prefer the more colorful logos which changed every year. It was always exciting looking forward to a new logo which more often than not, hit the mark.

New Orleans Pelicans Logo - Design and History http://www.dinesh.com/history_of_logos/nba_logos_design_and_history/new_orleans_pelicans_logo_design_and_history.html http://www.dinesh.com/history_of_logos/nba_logos_design_and_history/new_orleans_pelicans_logo_design_and_history.html

The New Orleans Hornets are a professional basketball team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. They play in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association. The franchise began play during the 1988€“89 NBA season as the Charlotte Hornets, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, where they were located for fourteen seasons. Following the 2001€“02 season, the team relocated to New Orleans, becoming the New Orleans Hornets In January 2013, the Hornets announced that they would change their name to the New Orleans Pelicans from the 2013-14 NBA season. The new name is taken from Louisiana's state bird, the Brown Pelican. With the new name also came a new logo - a menacing pelican holding a basketball in a blue, gold and red color scheme.

On closer inspection of the logo, there are a number of distinct elements of the logo and I will discuss the aspects that I have been able to read and pick up on

  • The font of the city "New Orleans" is the same as the font found on the street signs of the French Quarter, a famous part of this great city.
  • At the top of the logo, is the most notable symbol of the city, the Fluer-De-Lis (which can be see in the city and is also the basis of the New Orleans Saints logo
  • The crescent is also an important symbol of the city because the city was called the "Crescent City" back in 1835. The city is located on a semi circle bend of the Mississippi river.
  • Apparently the pelican is mean bird and that is reflected in the logo, which I hope will bring some toughness to the players in the team (like the Chicago Bulls logo
  • The color blue is associated with the state, gold with the city and red just adds a good mix.

After moving from Charlotte and being displaced for a while, the team may have lost its identify. In order to give the team its identity back, the new logo and name change is warranted and I feel is a good change for the team. The logo is nice and colorful, identifies well with the state and city and certainly a step up from the currently boring white and teal colors of the Hornets. The team has a future superstar in Anthony Davis, who may be a long term player for them. Having his era start with a new branding is a step in the right direction and may be the dawn of a championship winning team.

New England Patriots Logo - Design and History http://www.dinesh.com/history_of_logos/nfl_logos/new_england_patriots_logo_design_and_history.html http://www.dinesh.com/history_of_logos/nfl_logos/new_england_patriots_logo_design_and_history.html

The New England Patriots, commonly called the "Pats", are a professional American football team based in the Greater Boston area, playing their home games in the town of Foxborough, Massachusetts. The team is part of the East Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The team changed its name from the original Boston Patriots after relocating the team to Foxborough in 1971, although Foxborough is a suburb of Boston, 22 miles (35 km) away. For the greater part of the 2000 decade, they have been quite the dominant team led by coach Bill Belichick and quarter-back Tom Brady. The team was named the Patriots because of the area€™s heritage as the birthplace of the American Revolution.

The Patriots introduced their current logo in the 1993 season when the team underwent a major change in the uniform, colors and logo. The logo is a silhouette of a patriot with the primary colors of the US flag (Red, White and Blue) and a star on the hat. The Patriots logo is also known as the "Flying Elvis" to some because of its slight resemblance to Elvis Presley's long sideburns.

Green Bay Packers Logo - Design and History http://www.dinesh.com/history_of_logos/nfl_logos/green_bay_packers_logo_design_and_history.html http://www.dinesh.com/history_of_logos/nfl_logos/green_bay_packers_logo_design_and_history.html Image

The Green Bay Packers are an American football team based in Green Bay, Wisconsin. They are members of the North Division and are the second-oldest franchise in the NFL. The Packers were founded in 1919 by Earl "Curly" Lambeau (hence the name Lambeau Field on which the team plays) and George Whitney Calhoun. The Green Bay Packers have won thirteen league championships (more than any other team in the NFL) including nine NFL Championships prior to the Super Bowl era and four Super Bowl victories in 1967, 1968, 1996 and 2011.

The Packers are America's first pro football dynasty and also the first franchise to utilize corporate sponsorship. In 1919, the Indian Packing Company gave the team $500 for uniforms and equipment, hence the name "Packers". The Packers are an anomaly in American sports as they are from a very small town in Wisconsin but have a huge national following and huge success as well. The Packers are pretty much taking over from the Dallas Cowboys as "America's Team".

The oval "G" logo was created in 1961 by Packers equipment manager George "Dad" Braisher. To most people's minds, the "G" stands for "Green Bay". However, when the logo was designed and adopted, it was determined the "G" would stand for "Greatness". The team actually used a number of different logos prior to 1961, but the "G" is the only logo that has ever appeared on the helmet. Although the Packers have granted limited permission to other organizations to utilize a similar logo, notably the University of Georgia and Grambling State University, the Packers hold the trademark for it.

In the 1930s and 1940s, Green Bay used Blue and Gold as their primary colors but by the 1950's changed it to Green and Gold. The color scheme yields the common Packer nickname, "The Green and Gold" which they have maintained until this date.

Asian Paints Logo - Design and History http://www.dinesh.com/history_of_logos/india_logos/asian_paints_logo_design_and_history.html http://www.dinesh.com/history_of_logos/india_logos/asian_paints_logo_design_and_history.html

Asian Paints is an Indian chemicals company headquartered in Mumbai, India. It manufactures a wide range of paints for decorative and industrial use. It is India's largest and Asia's third largest paint company, with a turnover of Rs 96.32 billion. It is also one of the largest paint companies in the world and operates in 17 countries. Besides Asian Paints, the group operates around the world through its subsidiaries Berger International Limited, Apco Coatings, SCIB Paints and Taubmans. Asian Paints was founded in 1942 and has over 5200 stores.

In September 2012, Asian Paints unveiled a new brand identify and logo at a function in Mumbai. The existing logo was about 10 years old and the new identity was born after an extensive consumer survey was completed in some major cities across India. Some of the elements of the new logo are described below.

- At the heart of the new logo, is the ribbon which flows to create the lower case letters 'a' and 'p'
- The ribbon's design is meant to highlight the easy flow, smoothness, dynamism and possibility that their solutions and offerings will provide
- The ribbon has bright colours red, orange and purple giving it a nice contemporary feel
- The word 'asianpaints' with the 'p' shown with some dripping paint it still retained from the previous logo but unlike its predecessor, the term paints is in red not yellow

The new logo was unveiled by Soha Ali Khan. The Pataudi family has been associated with this brand for many years. The company also launched a branded home painting service called "Asian Paints Home Solutions". The launch makes no mention of any updates to Gattu, the impish boy who has been the mascot of the company. Gattu was designed by R.K. Laxman in 1954 (good to know for any trivia contest).

Growing up in India, whenever we painted our flat, Asian Paints was the paint of choice so the brand and Gattu will always remain in my mind. Its nice to see that the company is emphasising that a good brand matters and are investing in it.
