NBA LogosWith the NBA Finals commencing this month, I thought it would be good to focus on some of the NBA logos and take a look of how some of these logos were born and how they evolved. The first and most important thing you will have to do is determine the keywords you are tuning your website for. The trick here is to determine what your potential users are likely to search for. Also remember, do not try and tune for generic keywords because there will be a ton of other sites who have already tuned for it. Lets take an example. Lets say you have an Indian Restaurant called Banjara Palace in Bangalore. The first instinct may be to tune for "Banjara Palace" or "Indian Restaurant". Anyone who already knows your name is not your target audience, although its important to tune for your name as well. Even if you get in the top list for Indian Restaurant, whats the point, someone in Japan who searches finds you will probably never come to Malleshwaram for lunch.

Football Logos

With the UEFA Euro 2008 football tournament in full swing, I thought I would explore the
Euro 2008 logo. The 2008 UEFA European Football Championship, commonly referred to as Euro
2008, is the 13th UEFA European Football Championship, a quadrennial football tournament for
European nations. The tournament, which is being hosted by Austria and Switzerland, began on
7 June 2008 and is scheduled to conclude with the final at Ernst Happel Stadion in Vienna on
29 June 2008.

The logo has the following distinct components
Mountains - Both Austria and Switzerland are famous for their beautiful mountains. The mountains surround the soccer ball and form a large part of the logo. The mountains are in ed which is one of the primary colors in the flags of both countries. The mountains also have a nice delicate shadow as well.
Football - The football has various shades of green in it and is representative of the green mountains of the Alps.
Typography - The text on the logo has representation for the two host countries Austria and Switzerland. The red color also represents the colors of the two countries. The name of the competition Euro 2008 and the name of association that controls all football in Europe, UEFA. UEFA's logo is on the top of a circle, similar to the actual UEFA logo.

NBA Logos - Design and History

 | The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the NBA's elite teams and one of the most successful sports franchises. They have always had superstar players on their teams like Jerry West, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant.

The Lakers franchise was founded in Detorit and known as the Detroti Gems, before moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota (called the land of 10,00 lakes) and hence derived the name the Lakers. The team moved to Los Angeles in 1960 and have been there ever since. The Lakers Log consists of the team name, "Los Angeles Lakers" written in "Purple" on top of a "Gold" basketball. The text also has streaks to indicate motion. Purple and Gold are the team colors. Purple uniforms are used for road games and gold uniforms are used for home games. The team also wears white jerseys for Sunday and holiday home games.

 | The Boston Celtics logo is Celtic in gold and black twirling a basketball in a green circle The world-famous figure has his left eye winking at you, his left hand resting on his shillelagh, his right index finger is pointing straight upward with a brown basketball sitting atop, his left foot crossed over and to the side of the right foot, he possesses a big smile (with a pipe projecting from the right corner of his mouth) and he is dressed in black buckle shoes, black pants, a gold front-button vest with a matching bow tie (with green three-leaf clovers displayed prominently in view on both), a long-sleeved white shirt and all topped off with a black derby hat with the same matching three-leaf clovers.

Airport Logos

The city of Bangalore (Bengaluru) has undergone rapid expansion in the last two decades and desperately needed a brand new airport. The new Bengaluru International Airport will go live this weekend on the 23rd of May, 2008. The new airport has been redesigned to handle 11
million passengers. The redesign will see an increase in the size of
the terminal, number of aircraft stands, new taxiway layouts and
supporting infrastructure. |
I was intriguiged by the logo of the airport and wanted to figure out what the logo represented. In my opinion, the logo represents a flower with three petals in teal, red and yellow. The flower obviously is used to represent Bangalore as a "Garden City". The words Bengaluru International Airport are in clear text with Bengaluru prominent in teal. Also the branding is using "Bengaluru" instead of "Bangalore". The shapes of the petals and the convergence of the petal tips also gives me a feeling of Indian-ness to the logo. Why those colors were chosen, I am still not clear. Looking at the branding information and images of the airport interiors, it does seem like all aspects of the branding use these colors, which is excellent. You can see this in the images below.

firedog is the brand name through which Circuit City stores offer in-home, in-store & online services for computer repair, installation and support, and home theater product installation.
The firedog logo is a green, black, and white logo of a dog jumping through a hoop. The logo was designed to evoke the idea of Circuit City "doing whatever it takes to get the job right". The name "Firedog" was chosen because it evokes the kind of qualities Circuit City intends their technicians and installers to provide: helpful, friendly, knowledgeable and reliable. The dog is "Man's Best Friend" and Circuit City hopes that its consumers will think that the firedog's technician are the consumers' "Best Friend".
Also, in the Chinese Callender 2006, the year Firedog was created, is the year of the Dog. |

The Indian Premier League (also known as the "DLF Indian Premier League"), is a Twenty20 cricket competition created by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and sanctioned by the International Cricket Council. The first edition of the Indian Premier League starts on 18 April 2008. The IPL consists of 8 teams

The IPL logo consists of three pieces
- Batsman hitting a attacking stroke to represent the game of cricket. The swish of the ball moving attempts to signify that the game is fast moving and more exciting.
- The pyramid logo of DLF Universal Limited. DLF, is India's largest real estate developer based in New Delhi, India. DLF Universal secured exclusive rights to the Indian Premier League title sponsorship worth INR 200 crore (over US$50 million) for five years.
- The text "Indian Premier League" written in blue, probably to represent India's colours.
Overall, I am quite disappointed in the logo. Firstly it lacks any color and originality. I think the logo could have been more colorful. Secondly, plugging in DLF's logo in the logo is a poor attempt to please the sponsor.
The logos of the partipating teams are a lot more colorful and original and the IPL logo pales in comparison even more.

There must be very few people who do not recognize the Nike Swoosh logo. With a big arsenal of superstars such as Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Andre Agassi, Shane Warne, Maria Sharapova, Venus and Serena Williams. This list is pretty long. The company takes its name from the Greek goddess of victory, Nike. |
The Nike "Swoosh" is a design created in 1971 by Carolyn Davidson, a graphic design student at Portland State University. She met Phil Knight while he was teaching accounting classes and she started doing some freelance work for his company, Blue Ribbon Sports (BRS).
BRS needed a new brand for a new line of athletic footwear it was preparing to introduce in 1972. Knight approached Davidson for design ideas, and she agreed to provide them, charging a rate of $2 per hour.
In June 1971, Davidson presented a number of design options to Knight and other BRS executives, and they ultimately selected the mark now known globally as the Swoosh. Davidson submitted a bill for $35 for her work. (In 1983, Knight gave Davidson a gold Swoosh ring and an envelope filled with Nike stock to express his gratitude.)
